Which is better for hair removal, IPL, or laser?
Many people mistakenly believe that all hair removal procedures are the same. They are similar in appearance, but they do not use the same technology or provide the same outcomes.
Laser technology is simply much more effective and achieves substantially better results than IPL (intense pulsed light) with most clients achieving optimal results of permanent hair removal of 80% or greater after four to eight treatments. Laser hair removal is safer, more effective, and the only way hair removal should ever be performed
IPL devices on the other hand are not lasers. These devices produce a broad spectrum of wavelengths and cannot be to a concentrated beam. Because a range of different wavelengths is dispersed at a variety of depths only some of these are effectively absorbed by the hair follicle, causing substandard results, and increasing the risk of burns.
IPL is not as strong as laser so will need more sessions. This puts your skin under more stress, and it will spend more time healing. IPL machines typically use a range of wavelengths from 500 – 1000 nm. As these wavelengths are exposed to the skin, there is no ability for the light to discriminate between chromophores within the skin. Due to the broad spectrum of light, obtaining sufficient energy to destroy certain deep targets such as hair is often challenging.
IPL hair removal treatments are often cheaper than laser because IPL machines are less expensive than laser. Many clinics advertise “laser hair removal” when in fact they only use IPL. It is not laser hair removal. IPL technology will require more treatments and produce less effective hair reduction.

How does laser removal hair?
During Laser Hair Removal sessions, light from the laser penetrates through the skin and targets the melanin in the hair follicles. The pigment absorbs the light energy, which destroys the hair. Laser Hair Removal treatments can treat every area of the body where there is hair.
What can I expect during laser hair removal treatment?
Treatments take place in your practitioner’s office. Your practitioner will use a small handpiece to deliver an intense but gentle burst of energy onto targeted areas of the skin to remove unwanted hair.
What are the treatment areas?
Our laser hair removal treatments are done by Cynosure Elite iQ which is designed for ALL skin types. This technology treats light and grey hair as well, but may need extra sessions. Each laser hair removal treatment session takes between 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the target area.
SMALL areas include: areola, belly line, cheeks, chin, ears, feet and toes, forehead, hands and fingers, sideburns, upper lip and underarms
MEDIUM areas include: Brazilian, lower back, forearms, neck, shoulders, upper arms
LARGE areas include: lower back, upper back, lower legs, upper legs, full abs

Can Elite iQ Laser Hair Removal be done on darker skin tones?
Yes! Many laser hair removal treatments don’t cater to all skin types, but there’s a Gentle Hair Removal treatment that’s right for you, no matter what your skin tone.
How many treatments will I need?
Multiple treatments are required to achieve the full hair removal effect. The hairs on your body are not always at the same stage, so you’ll need to undergo a few treatments, an average of four to eight weeks apart, to catch them all in the growth stage. We usually recommend a standard protocol of six to eight laser hair removal sessions to achieve the desired clearance in the treated area. In between treatments clients can shave which encourages the damaged follicle to shed.
How do I prepare for a Laser Hair Removal treatment?
For about six weeks prior to treatment, you should avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing. On the day of your treatment, skin should be clean-shaven and thoroughly cleansed of any makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics, or self-tanning products. Apply sunblock (SPF 30 or above) before your treatment.
Do not expose the treatment area to sunlight or tanning booth light prior to or immediately after treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus, a prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed.
How long does a Elite iQ laser hair removal treatment take?
A treatment can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the treatment area and the condition being treated. Both legs can often be treated in as few as 15 minutes, as can an average-sized man’s back
What can I expect after laser hair removal treatment?
Temporary redness of the skin lasts for a very short time after the laser hair removal treatment session is complete. Most people return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment. A cool compress or gel pack may be applied for additional comfort after your treatment. Any redness or swelling should resolve in a few hours.
What precautions should I take after treatment?
After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Your practitioner may advise additional precautions
Are there side effects to laser hair removal?
Permanent side effects are rare and may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (laser bruise) in the treated area—these usually do not last more than a few days. Your practitioner will have more information about potential side effects.
Who can’t receive laser treatments?
Laser hair removal are suitable for most male and females over the age of 18 years. There are certain conditions which prevent clients from being treated, such as medications that can cause light (photo) sensitivity, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

Laser hair removal cost varies from clinic to clinic. Laser hair removal prices can vary greatly. When comparing IPL pricing and laser hair removal, IPL will typically be cheaper than laser given that the results are less effective and in the long run would require a lot more treatments.
